EXCERPTS

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has warned the Government that it must make serious provisions for childcare in the upcoming budget.

The organisation says that the lack of affordable childcare is a serious constraint on the ability of women to remain in, or to re-enter, the workforce, and that the problem is a serious threat to the attainment of planned economic growth.

ICTU General Secretary, David Begg, has told the Minister for Finance, Charlie McCreevy, that current childcare costs are a poverty trap for families.
