EXCERPTS

Child care workers are skeptical of the Ottawa's throne speech commitments to day care in Canada.

The federal government said it would speed up its delivery of hundreds of millions of dollars for child care.

Pat Wege of the Manitoba Child Care Association says she will hold off celebrating until she hears the dollars are flowing on budget day.

Wege says she would like to see Canada adopt a system used by some European countries, in which one per cent of the gross domestic project is committed to meeting the needs of children.

Here in Canada, she says, that would amount to around $10 billion each year, as opposed to the existing commitment of $935 million over five years.

In Manitoba, close to 25,000 children in licensed day care, but twice that many are waiting to get in.
