The Childcare Resource and Research Unit welcomes the Ontario government’s commitment to build a system of universally accessible, affordable, high quality early childhood education and child care over the long term.  The five-year plan announced today recognizes that these elements are interconnected and that a comprehensive system-building approach is needed.

We are most pleased to see the key elements of an affordability strategy and a workforce strategy:  parents need to be able to afford the child care services they depend on and valuing the work of a recognized and fairly compensated professional workforce is key to high quality. We very much agree with the government’s intention to expand significantly through not-for-profit services as well as the commitment to strengthening inclusion and to better data.
