THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Social Services Board says it is extending, but not expanding, emergency child care service for essential works.

The TBDSSAB on Thursday announced it will continue a partnership with two child-care centres to offer the service, but added both are at full capacity and the remaining centres are unable to offer emergency care under current conditions.

The news comes a day after Dr. Janet DeMille, the medical officer of health at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, announced that schools will remain closed to in-person classes through the revamped spring break, which concludes on April 16. The order also includes the suspension of before- and after-school care during the extended two week pause of in-class learning.

The TBDSSAB added that at the centres where emergency child care is being offered, only those in existing cohorts for those centres can take part.
