Construction has begun on the building that will serve as the new Mississippi Mills Childcare Centre, located at 34 Victoria St. in Almonte.

The new facility, which spans 13,000 square feet, will replace the existing centre located at 208 State St. in the town. It will add 78 more child care spaces, raising the total to 151 for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Ceremonial shovels went in the ground on Thursday, Aug. 14, attended by government officials, project stakeholders, and community leaders.

In February, Mississippi Mills, received $704,400 in a Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) startup Grant for the expansion of its child care centre, according to Mississippi Mills communication co-ordinator Ashley Kulp.

In April, Mississippi Mills council approved a $10.5 million budget for the project.
