EXCERPTS

The author of a study on farm vehicle safety and children is calling for better access to childcare services in rural communities.

Maxine Campbell, a lecturer in the Department of Societies and Culture at Waikato University, says the boundaries between home and workplace are blurred in a farming environment.

Dr Campbell says the study found that while farmers were aware of how to use All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) safely, they often adopted practices that were unsafe because that was the only way they could look after their children.

…

As a solution, Dr Campbell is calling for more subsidised childcare for families in rural communities. She says children will continue to die in ATV incidents unless farming communities have better access to childcare services.
