EXCERPTS

Two [Edmonton] councillors want the city to weigh in on the national child-care debate.

Councillors Michael Phair and Kim Krushell today will ask council to back a motion that calls on the mayor to write Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking him to reconsider scrapping existing day-care pacts. They warn that if Harper goes ahead, day-care spaces will be lost.

…

While the councillors are urging Harper to honour the existing agreements, they don't want the prime minister to scrap his $1,200-a-year plan either. "They both have benefits," Phair said.

…

Alberta was to receive $113 million annually in the final three years of the existing five-year pact, negotiated under the former Liberal government.

Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver and London have passed resolutions supporting the continuation of the existing agreements.
