Excerpts from the report:

The 50 member groups of the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action consider strong social programs essential to women's equality in Canada. An extensive analysis commissioned by FAFIA of federal budgets from 1995-2004 documented the degree to which federal funds had been withdrawn from supporting many of these services and programs. This withdrawal meant that in many cases, social programs have been significantly eroded, with recognized detrimental effects on women (see the Report of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women Twenty-eighth session, 13-31 January 2003: Concluding Comments).

FAFIA looks forward to a revitalization of the Canadian social union and to reengagement by governments in the work of developing and sustaining social programs and services that meet Canada's human rights commitments.
