EXCERPTS

Stephen Harper should consider a career in comedy. His child-care plan had me rolling on the floor ("A modern dad spells out his alternative day-care plan," The Journal, Jan.7).

Harper plans to give parents $1,200 per year. He unveiled the plan in a privately owned facility that charges $1,200 a month for infant care.

Harper says his plan will cost $11 billion over five years. But the bulk of the money will go to private operators, who will receive $10,000 per child-care space created.

Harper will scrap the current Liberal plan that will cost the same amount of money over 10 years -- a plan that is "based on agreements with the provinces to create regulated, affordable and accessible childcare spaces with an educational component."

Harper has again confirmed that his party's commitment is to private enterprise, not the well-being of families.
