EXCERPTS
Pressured by some angry parents Monday, [County of Essex] council
agreed to ask the City of Windsor to reconsider its decision to close
both city and county daycare centres in September.
[Amherstburg] Mayor Wayne Hurst and Deputy Mayor Bob Bailey were
both criticized for their failure to vote in favour of having Essex
County do its own analysis of public daycare's falling enrolment and
costs.
Amherstburg parent Scott Cipkar said he was disappointed that
Hurst and Bailey had seemed supportive of local daycare until the
county council vote last month.
...
County council turned down the launch of its own study of daycare by a 7-6 vote with both Hurst and Bailey opposed.
Hurst said he was convinced by the data that Windsor presented
that public daycare was too expensive for taxpayers to support any
longer.
If Cipkar had questions about the city study, he could pursue those with Windsor, Hurst suggested.
In view of the city's position, Bailey said he saw little hope of saving public daycare.
"It's an expensive service to offer," said Bailey.
"I believe the writing was on the wall."
