OTTAWA - Kicking off his campaign to become the country's prime minister, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff quoted Bob Dylan, chided Prime Minister Stephen Harper for being in contempt of Parliament, and promised he would improve daycare availability across the country.

Ignatieff quoted the Dylan lyric, "everybody's gotta serve somebody" and then said, "We've got to know, in this election, who we serve. It's your neighbour, it's your friend, it's your mom, it's your dad. It's the Canadian people."

Ignatieff's first campaign rally was held in an Ottawa hotel in front of a crowd QMI Agency estimated to be about 1,200 people.

......

Ignatieff drew loud boos when he mentioned his chief opponent, Prime Minister Harper. Earlier in the day in Ottawa, Harper dismissed Friday's decision by the House of Commons that his government had been in contempt of Parliament as mere parliamentary games, "just a vote of Parliament."

"Who does he think we are?" Ignatieff said. "Think about the contempt in that remark."

Ignatieff also told an anecdote about a female bulldozer operator he met in Newfoundland who said she was worried she couldn't work because, as a single mom, she couldn't get child care.

"We're fighting so that bulldozer driver can get child care," Ignatieff said.

No concrete plans for his child care proposal were presented Saturday, but they're expected to be tabled later in the campaign.
