EXCERPTS:

CALGARY - A 21-month-old girl who was discovered unconscious and not breathing at a home daycare in Calgary earlier this week has died.

The homicide unit has taken over the case of a little girl who was found on Wednesday afternoon and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Police said the girl died late Friday after the family decided to donate her organs.

An autopsy will be conducted early next week to determine the cause of death.

Her name has not been released.

Police have previously said they arrived at the home on reports that the girl was in distress.

There were three other children in the home at the time.

Before the child had passed away, police said they were not yet in a position to say how the child received her injuries.

"As is standard in all cases where a child suffers a severe injury, investigators are working closely with medical professionals to determine the exact cause," police spokesman Kevin Brookwell in a statement.
