EXCERPTS:

A young child has died of cardiac arrest at a daycare in Saint Basile le Grand, police confirmed Friday afternoon.

The 18-month-old girl was pronounced dead at the Charles Lemoyne Hospital at 1:15 p.m.

Daycare staff noticed that the baby was not breathing around lunchtime today at the Les enfants de la montagne daycare at 11 des Champs St. in St. Basile le Grand.

The daycare staff started performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called police. Paramedics arrived and continued performing CPR, but to no avail. The parents were advised and came to hospital and the child was pronounced dead.

Family Ministry officials told CTV Montreal that they had no reports on file concerning the daycare, which has reportedly been in existence for six years. Quebec daycares with fewer than six children do not require official registration and are only inspected in the case of complaint.

The operators of the small daycare did not speak to CTV Montreal.

Investigators of the Richlelieu-Saint Laurent squad have launched an investigation.

Saint Basile le Grand is a South Shore municipality of about 16,000, which sits 30 km east of Montreal.
