Parents, children and staff at a Markham daycare slated to close at the end of the month will be attending a city council meeting Wednesday morning to ask for a lease extension.

Council voted last spring not to renew the TLC Daycare centre’s lease after being in operation for 25 years.

The non-profit facility currently serves 60 families and employs 17 staff members at the Markham Civic Centre.

TLC is asking for a one-year extension but the city recently denied them that request in July unless the daycare signed an agreement with a new location.

The city wants to take over the space which they say is needed for its municipal employees.

The slated closure has left many families scrambling to find an alternative daycare space for their children.

TLC’s lease official expires Sept. 30 and the deadline to vacate the facility is Oct. 30.
