Newfoundland and Labrador’s education minister is calling on the federal government to increase its financial piece of the pie to ensure $10-a-day child care survives and thrives.
“To keep creating spaces, we need more — more money from the federal government through the Canada-wide early learning and child care agreement to help us address the families in need that are still looking for child care, and especially affordable child care,” Paul Dinn told reporters on Tuesday.
Dinn said he has written to his federal counterpart, Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu, and hopes to secure a meeting on additional funding in the coming weeks.

In an agreement between both governments, the federal government had $35 million for the program in 2021, which grew to $83 million in 2025-26. It will grow to the $90 million range in the next year, but then it’s expected to increase at a much slower rate.
Dinn said other provinces are facing "similar restrictions" and it's "a money restriction."
At the moment the federal government contributes a greater share to the program than the province. Eventually that will be equally shared, Dinn said.
