B.C.’s $10-a-day childcare program will be paused, and while the move is welcomed by advocates, they hope work is done quickly to resolve the issue.

The province says this pause comes after hearing from operators that the funding models “limit their flexibility to support high-quality, inclusive care.”

The B.C. government will be pausing enrolment of new providers into the model, though providers and families currently registered will see no changes.

“They recognize they’re off track in their implementation of a childcare system, we’re looking for improvements, but we’re glad we’re not continuing to move backwards. We have the opportunity now to actually make some progress.”

Gregson says under the current $10-a-day childcare program, wages were being rolled back for early childhood educators and the government was considering moving to an income testing method, “everybody spoke up against that.”

Now, she’s hoping for quick action.

“We want to make sure that any consultation they do is short, sharp, focussed,” Gregson said.
