Nova Scotia will not meet its target to bring child-care fees down to an average of $10 a day by the end of March.

Education Minister Brendan Maguire told reporters Thursday that Nova Scotia, like some other provinces, is struggling to fulfil the full terms of the agreement it signed with the federal government in 2021.

Although the province is on track to create the required 9,500 new spaces, Maguire said there is not enough money to get the average cost down to $10 a day. He said right now it’s at about $12.

Maguire said even without hitting the $10 target, his government has made substantive investments that increased wages and benefits for early childhood educators in a way that helped increase employment ranks.

Its efforts will also mean the province will create all the required new spaces, something other provinces will fall short on, the minister said.
