Five years ago, the federal government promised $10aDay child care to families across Canada — but today, affordable child care is now at risk, due to a major gap in government investment.

If the federal government breaks their $10aDay child care promise, both the economy and families will struggle. Without increased federal investment in child care, parent fees will rise, wait lists will get longer, and the child care sector will be thrown back into turmoil. The quality of child care programs is in jeopardy, the problem of recruiting and retaining qualified educators will worsen, and programs will close. In a cost-of-living crisis, families rely on affordable child care — and they cannot afford this level of uncertainty.

All of the ambitious economic plans for Canada cannot be realized if parents do not have access to child care.

Affordable child care is essential to Canada’s economy, enabling parents, especially women, to return to work, support their families, and grow the economy. In a cost of living crisis, families are depending on the federal government to follow through with their $10aDay child care promise in order to make ends meet.

While over one million families have benefitted from the program, $10aDay child care is far from being universally accessible, and thousands of families are stuck on long wait lists for spots. Plans to expand $10aDay, to ensure that all children and parents in all parts of Canada can access it, will be delayed or derailed unless the federal government increases its investment.

Our movement fought for child care for decades before the federal government announced $10aDay child care. Now, we need to mobilize to protect affordable child care. Join us in calling for the government to keep their child care promise, ensuring that we protect and expand affordable child care – for all families.
