Prince Edward County council supports the Province of Ontario engaging in talks with the federal government surrounding a national childcare program.
The staff report was brought forward by the Prince Edward-Lennox and Addington Social Services Committee after the cities of Toronto and Ottawa both circulated documents in support of national child care earlier in the summer.
At Tuesday’s Prince Edward County council meeting, council approved a recommendation that will see Mayor Steve Ferguson write a letter to Ontario Premier Doug Ford supporting the idea.
The letter will also be sent to Minister of Education Steven Lecce.
There was little discussion as all the councillors were unanimous in their agreement that the letter should be written and sent and it was approved.
Earlier this year Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced the idea for a national child care program that is centred around $10 per day costs for families.
The plan is for $30 billion to be spent across five years to reduce fees by 50% by 2022 and to have the cost down to $10 per day by 2026.
Shortly after, the federal government began striking up deals with the provinces and territories to bring the child care program to life.
Ontario is one of three provinces or territories yet to reach an agreement for national childcare with the federal government, including Manitoba and Alberta.
