EXCERPTS

The co-chair of the Provincial Child Care Council has resigned to protest Stephen Harper's decision to cancel the child care deal with the provinces and the Campbell government's failure to defend that deal.

Heather Northrup has served on the advisory body for five years, but says she's resigning over the provincial government's unwillingness to stand up for the deal.

Northrup says Stephen Harper put the provinces in a tough spot by announcing yesterday he will phase out the agreement, but the Campbell government could always fund the agreement itself. "I think that they should stand up and insist that Ottawa honour the agreements, otherwise I hope they would do the right thing and fill in the funding for themselves," Northrup.

Northrup says she was disappointed Premier Campbell did not publicly defend the deal, which would have delivered 633 million dollars toward the day care system in B.C. over five years.
