EXCERPTS
For the first time ever, the province has set up a $2.7-million capital fund program to renovate, expand or build new licensed child care centres.
Licensed, non-profit child care centres will be able to apply to the capital fund, with the first projects expected to be identified next year.
It builds on an announcement last week in which the province said it will spend an extra $1.6 million per year to support 699 licensed child care spaces in Brandon and rural Manitoba.
That's part of a larger announcement that will give $5.75 million to create 3,168 new child care spaces in Manitoba using money from the federal government's national child care initiative.
The money flows at a time when many day-care centres and pre-schools in Westman have long waiting lists, often because there aren't enough early childhood educators available.
