EXCERPTS
I was interested to read your article about the difficult situation faced by parents of disabled children (Mom's Career Suffers When Child Is Disabled: Report - on-line edition, July 30). However, I was quite disappointed that the supposed cause of this problem was seen as being the child's condition rather than social barriers.
For example, the article states that, "Of the 84,000 children whose family employment situation had changed because of the child's impairment…" Why is the child's impairment the emphasis here, not the lack of services? No parent needs to experience loss of employment, or make any other so-called "sacrifices" just because their child has an impairment. Rather it is the lack of personal attendants, inclusive childcare spaces and respite care that is the problem here.
