Faced with a projected $7.5-million budget shortfall in 2010/2011,
Cambrian College has decided to close its 51-space day care operation,
lay off the majority of its maintenance department, and turn the
operation of its residence buildings over to a management company.
Blame the province's funding model for colleges, says Cambrian President Sylvia Barnard.
"It's because of a decrease in base funding," Barnard told
reporters Wednesday. "This comes as quite a surprise to us because
Cambrian is a growing college. It (funding model) does not recognize
Cambrian's increases in areas such as co-op and apprenticeship programs.
The day care closure and elimination of the maintenance department will result in 13 people being laid off.
Cambrian currently has about 4,500 full-time students, an
increase of about 5.6 per cent from the past school year. A four per
cent increase is projected this fall.
The college had an accumulated $2.5 million budget surplus at the end of the 2009/2010 fiscal year.
The college, which has about 450 full-time staff, has an annual operating budget of about $75 million
