Six child-care rooms housing 103 spaces are being added to a Dorchester elementary school.

MPP Jeff Yurek announced Tuesday the province is providing $6.6 million in funding for the addition to River Heights elementary school that will also include one room for an EarlyON centre.

The province is giving the Thames Valley District school board approval to issue a call for tenders for the project at the school on Hamilton Road.

“I am very pleased that families in Dorchester finally have access to additional licensed child-care options in their home community,” said Yurek, who represents Elgin-Middlesex-London.

“The addition of these spaces represents a host of new opportunities for both parents and children at a time when access to child care has never been more important,” he said.

“This project is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces and parents with safe and affordable child care,” a news release said.

The Ford government is spending up to $1 billion to create up to 30,000 child-care spaces in schools over the next five years.

The next provincial election is slated for June 2.
