The Durham District School Board is cancelling a planned child care expansion at Sunderland Public School due to a funding shortfall.

The project was announced in 2021, when the province committed $1.6 million to the development of a new child care facility in Sunderland.

However, after the project went through the development process, the total projected cost came in at $5.5 million. While the province later agreed to increase its funding by 25 per cent, bringing its contribution to about $2 million, the board in a media statement says it is not able to make up the $3.5 million shortfall.
