Eight sites in Nova Scotia that provided in-person professional development workshops for early childhood educators are closing after their funding was eliminated in the most recent provincial budget.

A $1.05-million grant that kept the Early Years Professional Support sites open was cut in the 2026-27 budget by the Nova Scotia government.

The sites kept libraries with resources like activity kits, books and play materials along with equipment for students with disabilities that child-care centres often can't afford on their own.

Early childhood educators in Nova Scotia are required to complete 30 professional development hours every three years to keep their classification.

Some centres are worried the closure of the sites will make it more difficult to get required training.

...

The website for the NSCECE states their Early Years Community Development Centre will have its final day of operation on March 31.

Their online professional development resources will remain online and the majority of their physical resources were divided amongst staff while the rest were donated to child-care centres.
