Description

The Childcare Resource and Research Unit has published the 11th data-based report of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) in Canada. The resource includes a portrait of each province and territory's ECEC programs and services, as well as those falling under federal jurisdiction. Data and information have been supplied primarily by provincial and territorial officials as well as Statistics Canada and some additional reports. Key details regarding funding allocations, governance, space provision, legislated group/class size and ratios, auspice, workforce requirements, family leave provisions, benefits, and much more have been reported on— as they have been every two years since the first edition was published in 1992. Pertinent demographic data such as the number of children and mothers' employment rates are also included. The current 2016 edition represents a return to a longer, more detailed document, made possible through funding from Employment and Social Development Canada. The collection, synthesis and publication of these data allows users to conduct both comparative cross-Canada and longitudinal analysis, making it an essential tool for policy-makers, researchers, advocates and other invested stakeholders (see in particular comparative tables— the Long View and the Big Picture).
